Shrek is a horrible, introverted ogre that lives in a swamp and we can’t get enough of him. For the Christmas season, Shrek the Musical has bought delight to children and adults alike at Manchester’s Palace theatre. Much like his ungodly bottom burps, Shrek is just something you can’t help but laugh at.
A particular highlight is the song “I Know It’s Today” revealing Fiona’s 8423 day struggle waiting for a Prince… A wonderful depiction of three stages of her adolescence gracing the stage and singing in unison with a slight scent of sadness, frustration but mostly hope.
This musical is a great laugh and well worth the watch; a real homage to the film but spiced up with a bit more campy glitz, glamour and adult humour. At parts just on the edge of acceptable for children, Shrek’s writer Lindsay-Abaire gives a little more tongue and cheek to the much loved Dreamwork’s classic. A definite recommendation; just be prepared for a lot of childish giggling.
In Manchester until January 11th.
